This report provides the results of the three-phase project "Building Bridges for Adults with a Developmental Disability."
Phase one was used was to exchange information about positive developments in the fields of literacy and developmental disabilities. In addition, barriers, gaps and overlaps between the two service sectors were identified.
In phase two, the focus was upon developing a shared base of knowledge regarding the preparation and supports needed to promote successful participation by people with developmental disabilities in literacy programs.
During the final stage of the project, participants explored ways of building mutually beneficial partnerships to promote effective and efficient services to the people served by both groups while enhancing literacy.

If you attend breakfast meetings, luncheons, trade shows, or social gatherings, you need to have a ready-made answer to the question “What do you do?” For plain language professionals, it's not always easy to come up with a snappy answer. At the end of this interactive workshop, participants could develop a 30-second commercial that clearly described what their company does and how their products or services can benefit customers.

Roanna Yangco undertook this research while working at the Adult Literacy Program in Dorchester, Massachusetts which is housed in a multi-service center/shelter for single mothers and their children.
Yangco states: “In this research study, I wanted to establish a sufficient working definition of violence, one that encompasses all of the complexities of violence that affect low-income women. I hoped to identify the impacts of violence on the women in our literacy program. Using this knowledge I wanted to influence the design of a comfortable learning environment that facilitates a lifelong desire for learning. Finally, I looked to making our experience known beyond our program.”
