This document was published by the Yukon Literacy Council (YLC) to launch a seasonal literacy campaign featuring the work of 12 local poets. During the campaign, which ran from November 30 to December 21, 2012, the poems were read on the local radio station and appeared in the local newspaper.
Members of the public were encouraged to download a poem to post at home and work, then let the YLC know by email or via Facebook that they had done so. They then had an opportunity to win prizes.
The 12 poems in the collection showcase a variety of styles and themes, though many of them reflect the experience of living in Canada’s northern region.

This document outlines a study commissioned by the Rural Secretariat (New Brunswick) and carried out by the Rural and Small Town Programme at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB. The study’s goal was to summarize the impacts of low literacy levels in rural New Brunswick through a literature review, and to provide a comprehensive inventory of all literacy programs and services available in the province as of March 2008.
Rural New Brunswick was defined as all regions outside the major urban centres of Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton.
The authors outline the project’s methodology; summarize the literature review; and present findings from the inventory of services.
This document was published by the Rural Secretariat of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

Using easy-to-read maps, this report shows the wide discrepancy of literacy between those with and without disabilities.
The authors have used a Geographic Information System (GIS) to prepare maps that illustrate a variety of data about the relationship between literacy and disability in Canada. For instance, there are maps that show participation in the labour force by people with disabilities and by people with low literacy skills; income levels correlated with literacy skills and with disabilities; and the distribution of the population with disabilities by province and territory.
The authors note that this spatial look at social issues can provide useful tools for the development of policy and services.
The authors have provided difficult-to-locate statistical data. They point out that their work has shown that persons with disabilities face obstacles to full participation in Canadian society, adding that the evidence suggests it is easier for people with disabilities or with literacy problems to live an inclusive life in British Columbia and Alberta than in other areas of Canada.
