Authors: Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network, Donald G. Jamieson
Collection: Research Materials
This document offers a brief summary of the National Strategy for Early Literacy, developed by the Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network.
The authors begin with an explanation of the economic benefits of increased literacy skills and the barriers that stand in the way of progress on that front. They set out four recommendations for improving early literacy: encourage initiatives that facilitate children’s language and literacy development from a very early age; ensure that appropriate teaching strategies are used in all Canadian classrooms; encourage community support for literacy development throughout the year; and improve the sharing of literacy-related knowledge and resources.
