27 Ways to Celebrate Family Literacy Day

Authors: Sarah Elaine Eaton

Collection: Learning Materials

This document uses Essential Skills as the basis for activities to celebrate Family Literacy Day, observed in Canada annually on January 27.

For each of the nine Essential Skills, the author has provided three activities that adults and children can do together. For example, to promote document use, the author suggests using transportation schedules to plan an outing. To encourage continuous learning, the author suggests having one family member teach the others a new skill, like how to iron a shirt or post a photo to Facebook.

Adult Workers' Engagement in Formal and Informal Learning Double-A conformance, W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0

Insights into Workplace Basic Skills from Four UK Organisations

Authors: Karen Evans, Edmund Waite

Collection: Research Materials

This report presents four cases that have been drawn from a larger longitudinal study which analyzes the immediate and longer term outcomes of workplace-linked interventions designed to improve adult basic skills. In this study, researchers interviewed and tracked 564 employees involved in workplace basic skills programs in the transportation, cleaning and maintenance, administrative (research) and food processing sectors in the north and south of England. The researchers' goal was to determine what happens to the employees that may be related to their learning experiences, and what happens in the company that may be related to the existence of the learning program.

The report begins with some brief background information followed by a review of recent literature on the topic. Each of the following case studies is then presented:
- Coopers - a large food manufacturer
- HLN Manufacturing - large engineering company specializing in the manufacture of parts for cars
- The Weapons Defence Establishment - weapons manufacturer
- The Thorpton Local Authority

Collection: Research Materials

Michel presented a new tool called “Assessing the Complexity of Literacy Tasks.” It is designed to help document designers understand the ability levels of readers as defined in the International Adult Literacy Survey. This complexity-rating tool, based on the work of Irwin Kirsh and Peter Mosenthal, can help information designers ensure that the level of complexity of public information matches the literacy level of the target readers. It complements plain language techniques and can deal with some of the shortfalls of readability formulas based on school grade levels.

4. Attachment (2009)

Attachment

Series: Learning Starts Early!

Authors: Early Childhood Learning Knowledge Centre (ECLKC)

Collection: Research Materials

This booklet, prepared by the Early Childhood Learning Knowledge Centre (ECLKC) of the Canadian Council on Learning (CCL), is aimed at parents, service providers, policy makers, and the general public.

The authors explain that during infancy, it is critically important for children to bond with and come to treat their caregivers as safe havens, a core process known as “attachment.”

Children who don’t attach securely to their caregivers may face significant challenges in their development. Therefore, it is important that caregivers receive the information, guidance, and support they need to foster secure attachments with their children.

The booklet includes information on the roots and types of attachment problems, as well as a discussion of the best intervention methods for dealing with problems before they become ingrained.
