Explore Canada is a multimedia CD-ROM developed by New Media Language Training in collaboration with Parks Canada. It presents Canadian history, geography and heritage at a level appropriate for low-literacy Canadian adult learners and low-fluency newcomers to Canada. It contains 6 history and 6 geography modules which contain over 50,000 words about Canada, and over 200 images. There are also maps showing the provinces and regions of Canada, which the user can click on to link to information about that area. There are exercises and activities at the end of each module, quizzes, a basic word processor feature and a dictionary.
An accompanying teacher's manual explains the program and offers advice for lesson plans to integrate to Explore Canada into thematic units common to the literacy and ESL classroom.
Operating System: Macintosh or PC with Windows 95 with CD-ROM.
Cost: CD ROM for $40 ( English and French) and includes Macintosh & PC version

Prepared as a requirement for a master of arts degree at Alberta’s Athabasca University, this thesis offers a qualitative approach to research on adult literacy.
The author focuses on participatory literacy education, which is based on the belief that learners themselves should be at the centre of literacy instruction, defining their own needs and working out approaches to meeting those needs.
The author designed a questionnaire to assess how community-based adult literacy programs in Canada use participatory practices in their work. The questionnaire was distributed to 15 adult literacy organizations.
The analysis of the data showed that all 15 organizations use moderate forms of participatory adult literacy education within their programs. However, it appears that one-to-one tutor programs face a greater challenge in incorporating participatory activities that involve peer interaction or group activities, while small-group programs have greater flexibility in that regard.
The author concludes that both one-to-one and small-group programs have strong potential to incorporate participatory approaches into their instruction techniques.

These guidelines have been developed as a foundation on which to build Family Literacy programs in Nova Scotia. Because Family Literacy programs are developed based on the need in each community, there is no uniform program that is delivered across the province. What the programs do have in common is the same inclusive philosophy, values and commitment to their participants. Family Literacy practitioners can use this guide as a reference point for the development of their respective programs.

First Formative and Process Evaluation Report
Series: Manukau Family Literacy Project
Authors: John Benseman
Collection: Research Materials
This report incorporates both formative and process evaluation elements. It documents what has happened in this initial planning phase of the Manukau Family Literacy project, the issues that have arisen in its development, how these were resolved and offers some observations about why it has achieved what it has to date. It also includes a brief literature review of research in this area that has been used in guiding the programme's development.
This evaluation has been approved by the Human Subjects Ethics Committee of The University of Auckland (Reference 2002/230). A second stage evaluation proposal is currently being considered by COMET for the second phase of the MFLP, which will cover the programmes once they are underway.

This study has sought to map the impacts that two adult literacy programmes in New Zealand have had on their participants. In recognition of the fact that change achieved by education does not always happen immediately, the study has focussed on the experiences of students who have been out of the programme for some time. Its value lies in its demonstration of the diversity of impacts over the longer term.
