Exploring the issues of accountability in adult literacy through three case studies
Authors: Ralf St. Clair, ABC CANADA
Collection: Research Materials
The aim of this project was to compile what has been learned about building accountability systems in adult literacy in British Columbia, Ontario and Scotland. The findings are presented in three sections: dealing with systemic issues, how accountability mechanisms should be designed, and working with data. Wherever possible the findings reflect all three jurisdictions and focus on common concerns. It is the author's hope that some of the description and insights will be useful to people working in these and other jurisdictions.

A collection of learning materials for women on the street
Authors: Lucy Alderson, Diana Twiss
Collection: Learning Materials
"Dream Soup and Life Stew" is a literacy resource book created by women involved with the WISH Learning Centre for street women. In this book, the authors share some of the hands-on literacy materials that emerged when they developed a literacy project at a drop-in centre for female sex-trade workers in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
This book would be particularly useful to street workers or anyone involved in a community organization but new to literacy programs. Literacy or ABE instructors who want to reach further into the community with their programming would also find the material in this book helpful.

This video focuses on a drum-making workshop held at the Ekati Diamond mine in the Northwest Territories. The workshop was part of a series organized by BHP Billiton Canada, which developed the mine, to introduce its multinational employees to local Aboriginal culture.
The workshop is led by two Tlicho elders. The Tlicho, also known as Dogrib, are part of the broader designation of Dene Aboriginal people.
The video shows how wood and caribou hide are used to make the drums. It also explains the integral role of the drum in the Tlicho way of life and sense of community, and offers an example of the importance of the oral tradition in Aboriginal culture.
Throughout the video, the elders speak in Dogrib. Subtitles are provided.

This document describes a project carried out to examine the use of web-based health information sites.
The project involved three diverse sites and groups, including patients and health-care professionals from a family health team and clinic in a large urban centre; community members from a social support agency in an urban centre; and community members and health providers from First Nations communities in Northern Ontario.
As well, different models of website access were explored. Patients from the family health team and clinic were prescribed “tailored” health information by their doctor or nurse, while community participants were directed to the appropriate tools and their access to the site was facilitated through a community researcher.
Researchers used surveys and interviews to determine users’ level of satisfaction with the web resources. Among the themes to emerge from the results were the critical importance of valid, reliable access to health information; the need for a website facilitator for community groups; and the importance of a learner-centred approach with regard to website design, technology, and content.

This report offers an overview of recent research findings on the impact of poverty on young children. It was prepared as a resource for the first roundtable discussion, held in June 2012, on developing a Northwest Territories anti-poverty strategy,
The report is divided into sections dealing with brain development in the early years; the impact of stress on the developing brain; the importance of relationships; the impact of chronic parental stress; the impact of poverty; and the importance of building a strong foundation.
As well, the report includes a section on the example offered by the province of Quebec, where subsidized early childhood programs have become universally available. That initiative has enabled more women to participate in the workforce, decreased rates of poverty, and led to better academic performance for children.
