Series: The Interplay Between Formal and Informal Learning for Low Skilled Workers
Authors: Julie Salembier
Collection: Research Materials
A warehouse located in Edmonton, Alberta and belonging to Uni-Select, a leading distributor of auto parts in North America, is the site of the workplace program for this research project. Uni-Select offered an essential skills training program to several company employees after determining that these employees would benefit from upgrading their skills before using a new warehouse management system. For this case study, the author interviewed both learners and workplace instructors in several Uni-Select locations and uncovered several themes about the workers’ route to learning. In her study, she discusses the following key ideas: learning catalysts, key dynamics around participation, workers’ expectations of informal learning, the actual learning process, benefits of formal and informal training and personal learning power.

This report gives thought to the perception that in the midst of these tumultuous times the face of literacy is changing. Change demands a response, and this research project was formulated in an effort to engage some key players in the formulation of a collective response. Together, literacy students, literacy practitioners and representatives from community partners, addressed the following issues:
• What is a working definition of "low literacy" in the new city of Ottawa in the early days of the 21st century?
• Aside from low literacy skills, what other issues are present in the adult literacy student's life that have an impact on their ability to achieve the goals they have set for themselves as literacy students?
• Why do adults seek out the services of a literacy program? What motivates them to participate in a program?
• Given that there are several different types of literacy programs to choose from in Ottawa, are some program models more attractive to students and referring agencies than others?
This report is separated into 9 chapters and gives an interesting overview of the factors that surround literacy levels and programs in Ottawa.

A literacy & life skills program for women in conflict with the law
Authors: Bev Sochatsky, Sarah Stewart
Collection: Learning Materials
In 1998, a program was undertaken by the Edmonton John Howard Society and the Elizabeth Fry Society of Edmonton, with the collaborative support of numerous community-based agencies and organizations. This program was especially designed for women who were in, or at risk of being in, conflict with the law. The program focused on an integrated literacy and life skills approach to learning, with a commitment to participatory approaches to education from a feminist perspective.
The program had three Phases: Phase One, research and the development of a conceptual framework, was conducted in 1998-1999; In Phase Two, the framework was tested through four program pilots held in Edmonton in 1999-2000; Phase Three began in September 2000 with the goal of integrating literacy skills into an already-existing life skills program.
This curriculum guide is a sequel to the curriculum developed in Phase Two. It is a record of selected Changing Paths program activities from September 2000 to June 2002.
