Series: Workforce Literacy Essential Skills (WLES) Pilot Project
Authors: Literacy Victoria
Collection: Learning Materials
Between 2009 and 2011, Literacy Victoria in British Columbia worked in partnership with local businesses, community organizations, and Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) on a Workforce Literacy and Essential Skills (WLES) pilot project. The goal was to develop a nationally transferable program to help adult learners prepare for employment and successfully integrate into the workplace.
This resource list is part of the material produced for the program. The first part of the document contains a list of general resources connected to the program’s goals, including material about adult education, numeracy, language, and employment. There is contact information for each resource.
The second section contains a list of online resources, with links and notes about the kind of activities available at each site.

Series: Audio Centre - HRSDC
Authors: Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC)
Collection: Learning Materials
This audio file is part of a podcast series developed by Office of Literacy and Essential Skills (OLES), Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC), describing a research project that will help to update the computer use element of the Essential Skills framework.
In this segment, the manager of the policy and research group of OLES discusses with Véronique Cadieux what will happen now that the research has been completed. The next step includes coming up with a definition of what is meant by "digital skills" as an Essential Skill in the Canadian context.
Then these skills constructs will be broken down in order to describe the elements that make them more or less difficult to perform. That will allow for the development of a reliable scale on which people's skills can be graded and through which job tasks can be given complexity levels for the purposes of profiling occupations.

Series: Learning on Demand: Numeracy - The Basics - Video Tutorials
Authors: Workplace Education Manitoba (WEM)
Collection: Learning Materials
This math video tutorial looks at order of operations as it is applied to problems containing mixed fractions. The order of operations specifies that if a problem contains some combination of calculations, the multiplication and division components must be completed before the addition and subtraction ones.
The instructor uses several problems to illustrate the steps required, including converting mixed fractions to improper ones; carrying out operations in the correct order; and reducing the resulting fraction to its simplest form.
The problems get more complicated as the video progresses.

This audio file is part of a series of podcasts developed by the Policy and Planning division of the Office of Literacy and Essential Skills (OLES), Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.
In it, the manager of the Essential Skills Profiles group within OLES talks about a project carried out in 2011 to ensure that the profiles are current and representative of today's occupations. Fifty profiles, chosen from a variety of economic sectors, were selected for updating.
The updates include adding information on how each occupation is affected by digital technology; developing task statements for each occupation; and replacing the "computer use" skill domain with "digital technology" to reflect a more up-to-date concept of skills and tasks.

Series: Learning on Demand: Numeracy - The Basics - Video Tutorials
Authors: Workplace Education Manitoba (WEM)
Collection: Learning Materials
This video tutorial offers further practice in carrying out math problems involving mixed fractions.
It presents three problems of increasing complexity. Learners are asked to pause the video, work out the problems, then restart the video to see the instructor’s detailed solutions.
Because each problem involves a combination of calculations, the learner must also apply the order of operations to solving these problems. The order of operations specifies that if a problem contains some combination of calculations, the multiplication and division components must be completed before the addition and subtraction ones.

Essential Skills and RPL Certification for Advisors/Counsellors
Series: Igniting the Power Within - Workplace Education Manitoba (WEM)
Authors: Workplace Education Manitoba (WEM)
Collection: Learning Materials
Igniting the Power Within (ITPW) is a series of certification workshops on Essential Skills (ES) and Recognizing Prior Learning (RPL) for Aboriginal communities.
This document, the first in a series of four, is the curriculum for a two-day workshop for advisers and counsellors who want to plan and implement ITPW certification training in their communities.
By the end of the workshop, participants should be able to explain the concept of the nine Essential Skills; connect community priorities with ES training needs; identify and contact provincial ES coordinators; explain the concept of RPL; interview clients and learners to identify prior learning from both formal and informal situations; and explain how informal learning is transferable from one job setting to another.
The authors have included a detailed workshop agenda; instructions for facilitators; a discussion of best practices; interactive exercises; and handouts from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) about Essential Skills.
