12. New Words, New Worlds (1996)

New Words, New Worlds

Authors: Elma Gerwin

Collection: Learning Materials

These stories and poems were originally contributed to the student writing section of the Winnipeg Volunteer Reading Aides newsletter.

With the help of a grant from the Canadian Give the Gift of Literacy Foundation, Winnipeg Volunteer Reading Aides (WVRA) has produced a four-volume set of books. All of the 15 stories and poems were written by students of WVRA. Winnipeg artist Glennys Hardie provided the illustrations, which comprise at least half of each page. As well as enhancing the stories, they can be used to enable the reader to predict narrative events, and to provide contextual clues to word recognition and meaning, etc. Indeed, learners could be encouraged to write their own text for the pictures, or the pictures could be used with or without text in sequencing activities.

In general, Books 1 and 2 have shorter words and sentences, while Books 3 and 4 have more text and are somewhat more complex in style and conceptual content. These books should appeal to readers of almost any age or background, including aboriginal, ESL, and those with learning disabilities.

14. Highlights from the Canadian Report (1996)

Highlights from the Canadian Report

Reading the Future: A Portrait of Literacy in Canada

Series: International Adult Literacy Survey

Authors: National Literacy Secretariat (NLS), Secrétariat national à l'alphabétisation (SNA)

Collection: Research Materials

This report synthesizes the results of the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS), for Canada. IALS was a seven-country investigation undertaken in the fall of 1994. Its main goal was to create comparable literacy profiles across national, linguistic and cultural boundaries. Highlights from the Canada Report include :

Demographic distributions of literacy in Canada
Economic dimensions of literacy in Canada
Literacy practices in Canada
Measuring the success of the IALS
Appendices contain details on participants, literacy performance on three scales : prose, document and quantitative, as well as international standard occupational classification breakdowns at different group titles.

Regional distributions of literacy levels in Canada are examined, and results of IALS are compared with those of LSUDA (1989), Literacy Skills Used in Daily Activities. Other variables taken into consideration are : literacy and educational attainment, literacy and language, literacy and age. Under economic dimensions of literacy, researchers investigate relationships between literacy and employment.

The statistical data in the document are broken down by language, age, gender and religion. It provides new information with which to evaluate Canadian policy on literacy, education, and socio-economic development. The report gives Canadians a glimpse of their possible future, by opening a window on their life at home, in the community and in the workplace.

16. The Impact of ABC CANADA's LEARN Campaign (1996)

The Impact of ABC CANADA's LEARN Campaign

Results of a National Research Study

Authors: Ellen Long

Collection: Research Materials

In 1994, ABC CANADA initiated the LEARN campaign, a national media campaign aimed at linking potential literacy learners with literacy groups. Throughout the campaign, ABC CANADA gathered information from selected literacy groups about the effect of the LEARN ads. This study is the first systematic national attempt to measure the impact of the LEARN campaign.

This 97-page report is the result of research done with potential literacy learners by numerous literacy groups throughout the country, and coordinated by ABC CANADA. The findings show that the LEARN campaign is having a strong influence in every province of Canada, ranging from 32% of phone calls in Manitoba, to 59% of calls in B.C. The report also provides demographic information about who calls literacy groups in Canada; for example, 88% of potential learners were between 16 and 44 years of age, and 36% of potential learners were unemployed. These various statistics are shown in a series of tables and figures. The publication is intended for literacy practitioners and administrators, and it presents valuable information on referral services in the literacy field.
