3. Collaborative Action Research: A Catalyst for Enhancing the Practice of Community Youth Mapping (2009)

Collaborative Action Research: A Catalyst for Enhancing the Practice of Community Youth Mapping

Authors: Gordon Miller, Donna VanSant, Jennifer Mullett

Collection: Research Materials

This document outlines a collaborative research project carried out in Surrey, British Columbia, with the goal of mapping the opportunities and supports that facilitate positive development for youth in the community.

Ten young people were trained to be co-researchers in the project, taking part in the research design; recruiting interview respondents; collecting, transcribing, and analyzing data; and developing a knowledge-transfer strategy.

Through interviews and focus group sessions, they collected data from 174 of their peers. Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) technology were used to map the locations within Surrey’s neighbourhoods where positive resources in the form of people, places, and activities could be found.

The study found that youth’s primary resources were found in informal settings such as shopping centres, their own homes, or the homes of friends, and in such formal settings as work, schools, and sport and recreation facilities.

The Companion to SARAW

An Exercise Workbook

Collection: Learning Materials

The Companion to SARAW (Speech Assisted Reading and Writing) was developed for an expressed need, to expand the SARAW program's capabilities within the framework of the computer program. The same stories were also used to develop basic grammar exercises. Finally, a chapter was designed specifically for volunteer tutors and instructors that includes specific activities that could be done using different sections of the SARAW program. The ultimate goal of this publication is to make learning as easy and interesting as possible.

9. Geographical distribution of Adult Literacy Skills in Canada based on local area estimates (2007)

Geographical distribution of Adult Literacy Skills in Canada based on local area estimates

Authors: J. Douglas Willms, Richard Chan, Teresa Tang

Collection: Research Materials

This report provides maps of adult literacy skills for each of Canada’s provinces and territories and for its three largest cities, based on data from the 2001 Canadian Census, and from the 2003 International Adult Literacy and Skills Survey (IALSS), conducted by Statistics Canada and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The first section of the report outlines the mapping technique used for the project. Developed by the Canadian Research Institute for Social Policy (CRISP), the mapping technique’s aim is to estimate a score for an outcome variable for all Canadian citizens, based on the best available information for each individual, and then display the resulting scores on provincial or local area maps.

In the second section, the authors explain the five literacy levels, while in the third section, they provide pointers for interpreting the maps.

The report uses three basic types of maps; maps showing the percentage of adults at particular levels of prose literacy; maps showing the number of adults at each level of prose literacy; and maps showing average scores on the prose literacy test.

This work represents the first attempt to map social outcomes on a large scale using Statistics Canada’s survey data, the authors note. It opens up possibilities for using data to map other social outcomes, including those related to health and early childhood.
