Seniors Tell Their Stories
Authors: Garry Cranford
Collection: Learning Materials
This document includes more than sixty stories from seniors living in all regions of Newfoundland and Labrador. Collected primarily through taped interviews, the stories have been edited as little as possible in order to retain the individual voice of each contributor.
Some of the stories are personal reminiscences, like one man’s account of life as a coal miner or an Englishwoman’s experiences as an outport nurse. Others refer to historical events, like the tsunami that struck Newfoundland’s Burin Peninsula in 1929.
The collection is aimed at seniors who are trying to improve their literacy skills.

O Public Road... You Express Me Better
Than I Can Express Myself by Francis E. Kazemek is a story in the book Wayfering Journeys in Language, Learning and Culture, it is a collection of writings by ABE instructors and students in Newfoundland brought together for a ‘language awareness project', designed to explore attitudes, beliefs, and knowledge about language and the teaching of language.
"Even in the book's earliest stages, the concept of wayfaring, travelling close to the ground, was prominent as a metaphor for the literacy we need inside classrooms, and inside ourselves."
This is also a useful contribution to the literature of practitioner research and inquiry.

Integrating oral communication skills into the ESL classroom is nothing new – in fact that is pretty well a “raison d’etre” in the first place. Most language learning methods used in Canada include a balanced approach to learning that integrates speaking and listening, as well as reading and writing.
Oral Communication as defined in the Essential Skills Reader’s Guide refers to, “the use of speech to give and exchange thoughts and information by workers in an occupational group.” Dimensions of oral communication are based on four dimensions, including the range and complexity of the information, communication function and context, and the relative risks of a failure in communication.

This is the report of a project designed to answer specific questions about reading beliefs and reading proficiency in very young children from low-income families. The objectives were to 1) examine what young children (ages 4 to 8 years) living in poverty believe about their reading and determine how those beliefs come to influence the children's reading proficiency; 2) determine the role that parents in low-income families play in influencing their children's beliefs about reading; and 3) develop recommendations for the design of early intervention programs aimed at increasing reading proficiency for children living in poverty.
