This study, prepared under the auspices of the Canadian Council on Learning (CCL), is one of a series of reports on the state adult learning in Canada. The reports were intended to offer a knowledge baseline for the Adult Learning Knowledge Centre, which had recently been established at the University of New Brunswick.
The authors reviewed and analyzed information from databases, bibliographies, websites, and publications. As well as offering general observations on literacy, they organized their findings according to specific themes of Aboriginal literacy; English as a Second Language (ESL) and First Language Literacy; Francophone literacy; women and literacy; health literacy; family literacy; corrections literacy; literacy and work; learning disabilities and literacy; and technologies and literacy.
The document also includes detailed information about the methodology used; notes about gaps in available data; and suggestions for further study.

13. Adult Literacy Work in Canada (1992)

Adult Literacy Work in Canada provides a map of the state of literacy work in Canada, which identifies key issues in literacy for the 1990's. This study is offered as a stimulus to informed discussion and debate on literacy questions in various Canadian jurisdictions. It is also intended as a contribution to maintain the level of public awareness developed during 1990, International Literacy Year.
Ideas in the report have developed in many discussions among literacy practitioners and advocates. Many governmental policy documents and reports, and a number of civil servants, have been consulted. Some information has been drawn from a survey conducted by the Canadian Alliance for Literacy, a coalition of national organizations that seek to promote a more literate Canada. Reports of provincial and territorial representatives to the Movement for Canadian Literacy Board have been very helpful.
Adult Literacy Work in Canada is part of a larger project to enhance public understanding of the stake of Canadians in a literate society.

14. Adult Workers' Engagement in Formal and Informal Learning (2008)
Insights into Workplace Basic Skills from Four UK Organisations

This report presents four cases that have been drawn from a larger longitudinal study which analyzes the immediate and longer term outcomes of workplace-linked interventions designed to improve adult basic skills. In this study, researchers interviewed and tracked 564 employees involved in workplace basic skills programs in the transportation, cleaning and maintenance, administrative (research) and food processing sectors in the north and south of England. The researchers' goal was to determine what happens to the employees that may be related to their learning experiences, and what happens in the company that may be related to the existence of the learning program.
The report begins with some brief background information followed by a review of recent literature on the topic. Each of the following case studies is then presented:
- Coopers - a large food manufacturer
- HLN Manufacturing - large engineering company specializing in the manufacture of parts for cars
- The Weapons Defence Establishment - weapons manufacturer
- The Thorpton Local Authority

The Adult Working Group is one of fifteen working groups within the Health and Learning Knowledge Centre (HLKC). The mandate of each working group is to build a knowledge agenda for the Canadian Council on Learning (CCL) under whose auspices the HLKC was established. The Adult Working Group has focused its research on the health and learning of several different adult groups. This report addresses the health and learning of adults living in rural and remote areas. In its discussions with adults living in these areas, the Working Group sought to identify themes, gaps, and needs related to health and learning as experienced by these adults.

In its discussions with adults living with HIV / AIDS, the Working Group sought to identify themes, gaps, and needs related to health and learning as experienced by these adults. Ultimately, the group hopes their findings will lead to a greater understanding of the relationship between health and learning, and to initiatives to improve the health status of adults living with HIV/AIDS across Canada.

17. Adult's Perceived Literacy Near Universal in U.S., Canada, and UK (2001)

Based on the International Adult Literacy Survey data for Canada, the US, and the UK, there appears to be a considerable discrepancy between the results of the performance tests and the self-assessments. This article provides statistics to support this theory, considers the implications of this discrepancy, and suggests topics for further study.

18. Application of Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf to Adult Literacy Instruction in the Hearing Community (2005)

This document is a thesis submitted to the University of Athabasca by a student completing a Master of Distance Education degree. The intent of the research project described in this paper was to determine if the Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf (TDD) could be used to improve access to adult literacy services and the quality of instruction that is provided to rural residents. Although TDDs have been available since the 1960s, they have been used for educational purposes only within the hearing-impaired community. This study examined how those who can hear could use the technology. A case study was conducted at a literacy agency that provides basic literacy instruction. Staff members, instructors, and students participated in both the design and the conduct of learning activities.
This paper includes an introductory chapter with background information, literature review, methodology, results and discussion, and conclusions and recommendations.

19. Are We Facing a 'Literacy Surplus' in the Workforces of the United States and Canada? (2000)

20. At Risk: A Socio-economic Analysis of Health and Literacy Among Seniors (1998)

More and more research demonstrates that social, demographic and economic factors and practices affect the health of a population. However, much less is known about literacy skills and practices among those with higher health risks. Understanding these relationships is important, since weak literacy skills may impede good health care practices and healthy lifestyle decisions. Literacy can therefore be considered an important policy issue for health promotion: enhancing literacy can help to achieve health promotion goals, and understanding literacy practices and patterns can assist in more effectively directing health messages to target populations.
Using Canadian data from the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS), this research paper compares the health-related characteristics of seniors with their literacy skills and practices. The findings support the view that literacy skills and practices may serve as "barriers" in the attainment of good health.
