Year II Report
Authors: Janet Smith
Collection: Research Materials
The Literacy, Welfare and Work Longitudinal Research Project (LWW) is a multi-phase study of the complex relationship between literacy and employment, within the context of Welfare Reform. For Phase II, the researchers began tracking a group of seven individual students over 10 months, to better understand their experiences with education and employment. By examining students' lives over time, the research has begun to identify some of the more subtle and often complex connections between literacy and poverty, abuse, poor health, etc. and how these issues affect a person's ability to become gainfully employed.

This report reviews all the research that has been carried out to date on adult literacy in New Zealand. The author, John Benseman, states that "this review of research is important for both understanding current practices and capacities in adult literacy and indicating what areas should be prioritised in funding future research. While overseas research is often useful in increasing our understanding of adult literacy, it is nonetheless essential to generate New Zealand-based research that recognises the specific social and cultural contexts that are unique to this part of the world."

This project looked at the issue of losing contact with learners and adopted the following three objectives as a result:
To analyze the data relating to lost contacts within the four Ontario literacy streams (Anglophone, Native, Francophone and Deaf).
To consult literacy providers in the field in order to achieve the following:
- Identify the reasons for which contact is lost with certain learners.
- Identify the practices in use that can limit or reduce lost contacts.
- Identify the procedures used to perform student follow-ups; three months and six months; after students have exited from the Literacy and Basic Skills Program (LBS).
To identify for the benefit of literacy providers the practices that can limit or reduce lost contacts as well as the practices that ensure follow-ups are performed with students three months and six months after they have exited the LBS program.
