"The Boys' and Girls' Literacy: Closing the Gap" project is unique in that it aims to develop strategies that would particularly have a positive impact on boys' literacy. This holds substantial merit in that the strategies and methodologies selected to address the literacy performance of boys would not disadvantage girls. These strategies included literature circles, male mentors, and providing boy-friendly reading materials. The researchers based these decisions on current research in the fields of literacy and reading; gender and literacy; psychology; and curriculum.

The Northwest Territories has eleven official languages -- nine of these are Aboriginal. To maintain and revitalize these languages, it's important for children to learn their language. This booklet will help families support language development within the family. The activities are simple and can be part of everyday living.
The Northwest Territories Literacy Council adapted these activities from materials that Harnum & Associates prepared for the GNWT. The GNWT's Early Childhood Development Framework for Action funded this project.

In partnership with 26 national health associations, the Canadian Public Health Association raises awareness about the links between literacy and health among health professionals. Specifically, over the past nine years, CPHA's National Literacy and Health Program (NLHP) has promoted plain language health information and clear verbal communication in the health profession throughout Canada.
The NLHP has undertaken numerous projects in the following are as:
• seniors' prescription medication use
• access to health services and health information
• poor health communication and its impact on patients' informed consent and health professional liability
• hard-to-use forms that undermine the independence and wellbeing of low-literacy health consumers
• health among low-literacy youth

25. The Challenge to Create a Safer Learning Environment for Youth (2004)

The author sought to learn more about how violence affects learning by interviewing young people who are currently struggling with learning, either within or outside the school system. She explored how responses to trauma support or limit learning possibilities by interviewing young people and professionals engaged in the school system and in other education for youth.
This report is comprised of the interviews, which were taped and extracts transcribed. Only repetitions, “mmmms” and “aaahs” have been removed. Spoken language has not been edited to create a written format except where interviewees preferred to edit their words. All interviews are included in italics to draw attention to these words of wisdom.

26. Connecting Supply and Demand in Canada's Youth Labour Market (2008)

Canadian Policy Research Networks began the Pathways project in an attempt to shed more light on the paths young people take through school to the labour market and on the institutional and policy arrangements and values that support or hinder successful pathways. Through this project they hope to develop policy options that would improve young people's ability to identify, select and navigate pathways that lead to rewarding and productive lives. This is the eighth study that has been published in the series.
This particular paper focuses on "demand-side" issues in the youth labour market, how employer demand is conveyed to students and those who support them, and how well the skills that young people gain are utilized on the job.This report is based on a literature review, analyses of survey data and key informant interviews. It includes an executive summary, introduction, methodology section, listing of key websites and the following main chapters:

- Skill Utilization and Skill Development in the Workplace
- The Role of Employers in the School-to-Work Transition
- Policy Implications and Research Gaps

This report discusses a project dedicated to understanding the experiences of a group of female youths in Melfort, Saskatchewan and to finding ways of creating positive change in their world. The group appeared to be having a hard time dealing with everyday life. For example, the youths were putting their own and others' mental and physical health at risk by consuming and abusing both alcohol and drugs, not completing their secondary education, and becoming violent both physically and verbally.

"Demystifying Adult Literacy For Volunteer Tutors: A Reference Handbook and Resource Guide" is a compilation of some of this background information gathered from a variety of different sources.
Each section ends with a list of references from which the information is obtained.
This Reference Handbook and Resource Guide is intended as a 'tool' for new and more experienced tutors, to provide background information about:
- literacy itself, how widespread it is and why;
- volunteer tutors - roles and responsibilities, and what personal characteristics are helpful in your role;
working with adult learners, what they need, how they feel;
- developing the tutor/learner relationship and learning program.
Also provided are: a glossary entitled "Are you literacy literate?" which outlines various types of literacy programs, and clarifies many common terms within the literacy field; and an extensive Annotated Bibliography of resources available through Literacy Partners of Manitoba.
