Lessons in Learning – May 29, 2008
Series: Lessons in Learning
Authors: Canadian Council on Learning (CCL)
Collection: Research Materials
Today’s parents are faced with a bewildering amount of information on how to promote the health of their young children. Often, the messages they receive are contradictory, the authors of this paper point out. For instance, messages about safety may conflict with advice on promoting vigorous outdoor activity.
Without reliable tools to access and comprehend this information, parents’ ability to promote the health of their young children is compromised, they note. The issue of mixed messaging in health information will likely remain, especially with the proliferation of health advice over the internet.
The authors point to a possible solution, contained in a Health Canada report that calls for a concerted effort by all levels of government, health care experts, and community organizations to develop and fund a five-year national, evidence-based strategy for injury prevention in children and youth.

Series: National Strategy for Early Literacy
Authors: Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network
Collection: Research Materials
The National Strategy for Early Literacy is a pan-Canadian effort to develop an action plan for improving the literacy skills of young Canadians. The strategy involved determining what is known and not known about improving early literacy; preparing policy research papers to summarize the available evidence in key areas; conducting a national public consultation to get advice on what can and should be done; and synthesizing all the information into a report.
The report concludes with specific recommendations on how current policies and practices can be modified to improve literacy outcomes, and how these can be monitored publicly.
The authors have included appendices that list the research papers commissioned for the report and the submissions received at public hearings.

Authors: Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network, Donald G. Jamieson
Collection: Research Materials
This document offers a brief summary of the National Strategy for Early Literacy, developed by the Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network.
The authors begin with an explanation of the economic benefits of increased literacy skills and the barriers that stand in the way of progress on that front. They set out four recommendations for improving early literacy: encourage initiatives that facilitate children’s language and literacy development from a very early age; ensure that appropriate teaching strategies are used in all Canadian classrooms; encourage community support for literacy development throughout the year; and improve the sharing of literacy-related knowledge and resources.

Education Opportunities, Alternatives and Enhancements for Maritime Communities
Authors: Margaree Education Coalition
Collection: Research Materials
Parents around the world have one thing in common—a concern about how to best prepare children to succeed in the rapidly changing global environment of the modern world. To achieve this, schools must offer the greatest possible range of learning opportunities and enlighten younger generations so they can help make the world a better place. This is the challenge of New Learning.
This ”New Learning Guide” outlines the opportunities for enhancement to education that are currently available within the public systems in the Maritime Provinces. It discusses possible alternatives to the public schools that we now have, ways to build communities and strategies for effective action for change, and offers a proposal for a "community-operated public school". Also included in this Guide is a comprehensive resource list, information on the public education structures in the three Maritime Provinces, and an annotated bibliography.

O Public Road... You Express Me Better
Than I Can Express Myself by Francis E. Kazemek is a story in the book Wayfering Journeys in Language, Learning and Culture, it is a collection of writings by ABE instructors and students in Newfoundland brought together for a ‘language awareness project', designed to explore attitudes, beliefs, and knowledge about language and the teaching of language.
"Even in the book's earliest stages, the concept of wayfaring, travelling close to the ground, was prominent as a metaphor for the literacy we need inside classrooms, and inside ourselves."
This is also a useful contribution to the literature of practitioner research and inquiry.
