a Great-West Life Connecting Communities guide
Authors: Natalie Wilson, Meghan Wylie
Collection: Learning Materials
There are a million ways to encourage kids to get involved in language, literacy and learning. Many of the day to day things that we do with our children have a huge impact on their development.
This guide is meant to introduce parents and older kids to some of the fun ways to play with language. The book has been designed with a “keep it simple” philosophy, so that activities involve few materials (or none) and can be played inside or outside, sitting in a waiting room, or even while watching TV.
Activities are grouped into theme chapters including Fun N’ Games, Creative Cooking, Imagination Station, and Write On! Each activity is assigned a symbol to indicate the appropriate age level – preschool (toddler to JK), primary (K to grade 2), and intermediate (grade 3 – grade 5).
Includes a bibliography.

The authors of this document encourage families to become aware of the literacy opportunities surrounding them in everyday life. For instance, they point out that children playing “let’s pretend” are building their vocabulary, developing language skills, and learning how to tell a story.
The authors have included ideas for specific games families can play together, like going on a scavenger hunt for words or using family photographs as the starting point for a story. They have also included suggestions for outdoor activities, like building a snow family.
The authors also provide suggestions for books to interest children from the preschool years to about Grade 6.

Any Child Can
Authors: S. Celia Jaipaul
Collection: Learning Materials
Early involvement with words and reading is essential for the development of all aspects of a child’s life. This book provides many practical ideas on how to make this fun with everyday activities. The author shows parents how to take advantage of teaching and learning opportunities that occur while preparing meals, during a trip to the grocery store or an outing to the park, and other times during the day.
Reading with young children is the best possible way to support them in becoming full participants in a reading world, and this book helps parents and others to teach their children by playing with words. "Playing With Words" is a follow-up to "World Of Words" and can be used by parents and educators to help children develop literacy skills.
