Authors: Deborah Ibey, Joyce Bigelow, Ditty van Tol
Collection: Learning Materials
This report is developed to assist literacy agencies and their partners in developing a Trails to Literacy project. Trails is a ‘participatory’ learning concept developed to link learner-driven literacy upgrading with community marketing.
This report includes the following:
- Background on our original project at North Frontenac Literacy Program in Sharbot Lake, ON
- Different stages of the project:
Vision (includes goals, concept, benefits and recruiting)
Action (includes theory on authentic, collaborative and participatory learning)
Activities (includes pilot projects)
- Evaluation
- Suggested activities
- Sample forms
In a Trails project, practitioners and learners take part at various levels. The original goals, benefits and concepts need to be evaluated, as well as the activities and direction of the participants. Beyond this, the learning also has to be evaluated for the group and all individuals. Challenges and hopes for the future for Trails to Literacy will also be discussed.

Online training has proven to be an effective and popular means of delivering training, and Community Literacy of Ontario is committed to continuing development in this venue. This report is designed to help community-based literacy agencies conduct online workshops of their own.
The format of this report is quite straightforward. First, the authors describe what they did to deliver the online workshop. This is followed by tips to use when designing and delivering online training. The authors believe that the keys to successful delivery of an online workshop are planning, strong content and facilitation—not unlike the successful delivery of any workshop!

This document sets out a five-year plan for the Yukon Literacy Coalition (YLC), a community-based organization committed to increasing literacy and Essential Skills for adult learners. The plan is a tool to help stakeholders, members, and funders understand the YLC’s priorities and the actions required to meet these priorities.
The document is divided into sections dealing with workplace and workforce literacy; adult learner support; practitioner support; family and community literacy; Aboriginal literacy; and internal services.
The authors note that while the plan will require updating, it will remain the blueprint for the coalition’s work during the five-year period.
