Final Report

This report describes a review of the training and certification system used by Laubach Literacy Ontario (LLO) to ensure that tutor and trainer competencies required by all levels in LLO’s current certification system were identified. The project, which began in January 2009, was considered one of the affiliated projects in support of the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum initiative.
Prior to that point, LLO’s training system required all trainers to participate in a 12-hour live workshop to complete their certification. Through this project, all trainer workshop segments were converted to an e-platform to make delivery flexible enough to meet the needs of those who are unable to attend a full live workshop.
In addition, a video was developed to support each segment or module. The online training segments for trainers were reviewed, developed, and peer-reviewed by LLO’s Training, Development and Certification (TDAC) system and are now available to all literacy practitioners across the province, not just those belonging to member agencies.
The updated certification system was launched on the LLO website during 2011. For more information, please click here: http://www.laubach-on.ca/teach/training/forms.

This report summarizes a two-year project aimed at incorporating essential skills into training for volunteer tutors across Canada. The project was undertaken by Laubach Literacy Ontario, in partnership with Literacy Volunteers of Quebec and Laubach Literacy New Brunswick and with input and feedback from two employer partners.
The project’s objective was twofold: to increase the use and understanding of essential skills in community-based literacy programs and help volunteer tutors integrate them into their lesson plans; and to develop, write and distribute learning activities focused on reading, writing document use and numeracy in Levels 1 and 2 of the essential skills.
The authors have included an outline of the course as it appears online at Laubach Literacy Ontario’s website.

This document grew out of a project that looked at the Essential Skills of reading text, document use, and writing in relation to three Laubach Literacy series: Laubach Way to Reading; Challenger; and Voyager. The goal was to assess the material in the three series through the framework of Essential Skills complexity levels, in the same way the material had already been linked to the five Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) levels.
The author has prepared “Link” charts that show the relationship between Essential Skills and the Laubach materials. For comparison purposes, the charts also show the original designations according to the five LBS levels.
