Young Adults in the North Share Their Stories [Video - 3:08]

Series: Adult Learning Video Series

Authors: Adult Learning Knowledge Centre (AdLKC)

Collection: Learning Materials

This video, about three minutes in length, focuses on a program in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, to help young people improve their literacy skills and set goals for the future.

The program coordinator explains that her job was to create a 10-module literacy workshop aimed at young adults, between the ages of 15 and 29, who were not employed and not in school.

She decided, at the end of the program, to compile the students’ work in a publication. Entitled “A Place All My Own,” it includes personal stories as well as writings about First Nations heritage. It can be found at http://library.nald.ca/item/6429.

The video was prepared by the Adult Learning Knowledge Centre (AdLKC).

One of the most important was changing our class format to a “college” model. Students were offered a series of
classes in reading and writing; computer learning; photostories; reading group; and a book club.

Selected works by students in our program are presented in this book. We also celebrate our students and tutors by presenting this book as a yearbook.

Stories from UFCW Literacy Students

Authors: UFCW Training Centre Students

Collection: Learning Materials

This booklet is a compilation of stories written by members of a workers' union in Winnipeg, Manitoba attending the UFCW Local 832 Literacy Program. It is a chance for the authors to let their voices and stories be heard. Through these stories, we not only learn about their struggles - we learn about how far they have come. We acknowledge and build on their experiences and skills. We hope that other workers will see themselves in our learners' stories and take encouragement and strength from them in their struggles to transform their own lives.

Series: Write On!

Authors: Literacy Unlimited

Collection: Learning Materials

This is an annual publication that showcases writing by adult learners at Literacy Unlimited, a community organization based in the Montreal suburb of Pointe Claire.

This year, all learners were invited to submit a piece about a “first” that they had experienced. Their responses include descriptions of the first day on a new job, the birth of a child, and the first time playing softball.

One learner wrote about meeting her literacy tutor for the first time while a learner who grew up in Sri Lanka described seeing snow for the first time.

The authors note that the call for submissions for the publication drew the greatest number of responses since Literacy Unlimited began publishing Write On! in 2006.
