Series: Adult Learning Video Series
Authors: Adult Learning Knowledge Centre (AdLKC)
Collection: Learning Materials
This video, about three and a half minutes in length, focuses on a program that combines writing with reading to help both parents and young children advance their literacy skills.
The “Picture It, Publish It, Read It” program was developed by professors at Mount Saint Vincent University in Nova Scotia and was piloted with a parents’ group in Yarmouth, in the southwest region of that province.
The program builds on the parents’ existing knowledge of the importance of reading to their children by showing how writing fits into overall literacy. Children in the program were given cameras to take photos in their neighbourhood, then used the pictures they had taken to make books about their interests.
The program helps parents gain confidence in their ability to support their children’s learning as they begin school.
The video was prepared by the Adult Learning Knowledge Centre (AdLKC).

Summary
Authors: Célinie Russell
Collection: Research Materials
The purpose of this study was to discover strategies for encouraging adult francophones with poor literacy skills to articulate a need for literacy training and strategies that education centres can use to answer that need adequately. A literature review identified several obstacles to participating in adult education programs: a lack of interest in adult education, a very low value placed on education, and a belief that the expected payback from adult education does not justify the effort it requires. A literature search identified the one-stop access approach and integrated training programs as two possible ways of overcoming obstacles to participation in adult education and providing the types of training that are in greatest demand.

Handbook For Facilitators
Authors: Wendy Magahay
Collection: Learning Materials
The AWAL Guide: Handbook for Facilitators is essentially “AWAL in a box.” The background information, suggestions, and resources collected here are intended to provide you with the tools and support you need to understand, plan for, deliver, and benefit from an AWAL Workshop for your organization.
AWAL (Applications of Working and Learning) is a valuable and effective program that can result in strong benefits for both faculty development and curriculum resource development. Through meeting with and learning from employers and employees, AWAL provides a means for educators to incorporate into their own teaching practice an emphasis on the skills that Canadian workplaces have identified as essential.
However, AWAL is not intended to provide a complete examination of a job, and certainly not of the people who do those jobs.

The Conference Board of Canada workplace education case studies series highlights businesses that demonstrate effective practices in encouraging and supporting workplace learning. This study looks at the workplace education program in place at the Elmsdale Lumber Corporation, a family-owned producer, exporter and wholesaler of kiln-dried lumber located in Nova Scotia and employing 57 people.
In recent years, technical changes, the introduction of silviculture and greater competition have increased the need for a skilled, knowledgeable and literate workforce in the lumber industry. The company established a workplace education program founded on basic skills training so that its existing employees would have the skills to meet these new demands. This case study looks at various aspects of this successful workplace learning program, including the program's background and objectives, target groups, learning activities, challenges, keys to success and benefits.
