This book is a celebration of learning in the Independent Studies program at Frontier College for 2003-2004. Our program made many changes in the past year.
One of the most important was changing our class format to a “college” model. Students were offered a series of
classes in reading and writing; computer learning; photostories; reading group; and a book club.
Selected works by students in our program are presented in this book. We also celebrate our students and tutors by presenting this book as a yearbook.

This booklet introduces the reader to ten interesting women who live and work in the Yukon, performing jobs that have traditionally been done by men.
It wasn't many years ago that most doctors, accountants, lawyers, police officers, and carpenters were men. Things are changing. More and more women are entering the work force; many of them are in professions and trades. Many occupations that were dominated by men are beginning to have better representation of women. The ten occupations highlighted in this booklet are just a few of the hundreds of trades and professions that are options for women to consider for future work.

A Guide for Planning Union Conferences in Clear Language
Series: Learning in Solidarity
Authors: Bev Burke, Lynette Plett
Collection: Learning Materials
We've all been at events where we've felt confused or left out when we don't understand what's going on. Sometimes, this happens because of the way people talk or how information is presented. Over the last few years, the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) and other labour groups have taken steps to integrate a literacy and clear language approach into their communications, courses and conferences to avoid that confusion and sense of exclusion. As part of this effort, the Canadian Labour Congress has developed this guide for staff and activists in the labour movement who are involved in organizing conferences or other large events for their members.
This guide includes
- an explanation of how clear language can help make conferences more inclusive;
- concrete tools for planning a clear language conference;
- a model for developing guidelines for "thinking equality" when planning labour events;
- selection of clear language resources.

This video, about three minutes in length, focuses on a program in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, to help young people improve their literacy skills and set goals for the future.
The program coordinator explains that her job was to create a 10-module literacy workshop aimed at young adults, between the ages of 15 and 29, who were not employed and not in school.
She decided, at the end of the program, to compile the students’ work in a publication. Entitled “A Place All My Own,” it includes personal stories as well as writings about First Nations heritage. It can be found at http://library.nald.ca/item/6429.
The video was prepared by the Adult Learning Knowledge Centre (AdLKC).

Perceptions of Career Planning, Goal Setting and Literacy
Authors: Heather C. Marsden
Collection: Research Materials
This research project examined barriers that young Deaf adults currently face with regard to career planning and life goal setting; young adults' perception of the significance of low literacy as a barrier to career planning and goal setting as weighted against other perceived barriers, and; young adults' perceptions of the importance of literacy, training in order to career plan or set goals.
Summarized in this document are the anecdotes of 34 Deaf and hard-of-hearing youth across Ontario. These youth represent a variety of education, class and cultural backgrounds; however, their experiences with and knowledge of goal setting and career planning are strikingly similar. None seemed to know that literacy programs can help with career planning.
