This guide has been developed to help community facilitators lead a two-hour workshop designed to encourage parents to create their own family literacy scrapbook. It includes the corresponding parent’s guide, with the addition of some information on facilitation at the front of each section. For example, there are tips for facilitating groups and suggestions for planning the workshop schedule.

The guide includes sections on helping parents find their strengths; discover their learning styles; set goals; make a plan; collect artifacts; and prepare a scrapbook.

The authors have also included a list of required supplies.

This document describes a project designed to help parents create an atmosphere of learning in the home and, at the same time, make a scrapbook the family can enjoy and add to over time.

Parents will learn that literacy is more than just reading; what the nine Essential Skills are and why they are important; that family literacy activities can be fun; how to identify strengths and learning styles; how to set goals and make plans as a family; and how to create an environment of learning.

The authors include tips for collecting artifacts from family activities and provide suggested resources for further reading.

This document also forms the basis for a facilitated workshop. However, if there is no workshop available, parents can use the guide on their own.

In this video, about 12 minutes in length, three adult learners discuss the impact of sharing their personal stories in the media. Each of the learners has given many interviews for both print and broadcast media.

They offer tips for coping with nervousness and presenting the message effectively. Their tips include practising in front of a mirror; asking for interview questions in advance if possible; and getting information about the venue where the interview will take place.

Other topics include setting boundaries by specifying areas that are off limits during an interview; handling an interviewer who don’t seem to understand the issue; and dealing with the response from the public.

This lesson plan, part of the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) Essential Skills series, helps employees be able to understand and complete a variety of basic personal-information forms, as well as enabling them to respond to questions and ask questions of other people in order to give or receive personal information. The lesson plan is at CLB Level 1-2 and focuses on the essential skills of document use and oral communication.

The estimated time required for the lesson is two hours. Vocabulary for the lesson includes the names of the letters of the alphabet and numbers.

The lesson plan includes a list of materials and equipment needed, including an overhead projector and transparencies. Audio dialogue for the lesson is available in mp3 files embedded in the document. There are also suggestions for additional learning activities and evaluation. Appendices include sample forms for use in class.
