This video, part of a series prepared by Literacy Nova Scotia, focuses on ways to turn the marking of a math exercise into a learning situation.

Literacy educator Kate Nonesuch uses the example of a worksheet on adding fractions, some with the same denominator and others with different denominators. In this case, the first three problems have been answered correctly, giving the instructor an opportunity to discuss how the student arrived at those answers and to give positive feedback.

The student has answered two more complex problems incorrectly. This time, the instructor asks him what is different about those problems and encourages him to figure out the correct way to do them.
