Tips on Introducing Essential Skills into Construction Trades Training (2010)

Tips on Introducing Essential Skills into Construction Trades Training

Authors: Construction Sector Council (CSC)

Collection: Learning Materials

Trades instructors looking for practical ways to teach Essential Skills to apprentices studying a trade will find useful information in this publication. It provides tips and strategies for teaching Reading, Document Use and Numeracy.

The advice was gathered from instructors who provided training to apprentices identified through a pilot study as needing Essential Skills upgrading. Although the focus is on strategies for teaching reading, document use, and numeracy, the authors point out that apprentices will use all nine Essential Skills throughout their technical training.

The first section of the document offers an introduction to the role of Essential Skills in technical training.

Other sections deal with formal and informal assessments; planning and implementing upgrading; and strategies for integrating Essential Skills into technical instruction.

You can purchase a hard copy of this document on the Construction Sector Council’s website at http://www.csc-ca.org.
