The authors of this booklet follow an oil pipeline welder through a typical day to show how he uses Essential Skills on the job.

He begins his day by using oral communication skills to discuss safety concerns with his supervisor, then draws upon document use skills to interpret symbols on a drawing to decide what kind of weld is needed. Critical thinking is required to determine which electrode is required in a particular situation.

The authors have included a section with questions that allow readers to assess how well their skills compare to those of an experienced welder.
