Using Essential Skills: On the Job with a Plumber

Series: Using Essential Skills and Apprenticeship Tools - HRSDC

Authors: Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC)

Collection: Learning Materials

ISBN: 978-1-100-13830-5

The authors of this booklet follow a plumber through a typical day to illustrate how he uses Essential Skills in his work.

The plumber begins his day by using oral communication skills to discuss work with his boss and using writing skills to make notes about the project. He uses numeracy to calculate the space required to install a new toilet, then uses critical thinking to deal with a problem that crops up.

The authors have included a section with questions that allow readers to assess how well their skills compare to those of an experienced plumber.
