In this booklet, the authors follow an automotive service technician through a typical day to show how he uses Essential Skills in his job.

He begins his day by using the skill of document use to check the work order board to find out what tasks he has been assigned, then uses oral communications skills to talk to a customer about a problem he is having with his car. He uses numeracy skills when he measures the thickness of a brake pad and critical thinking when he has to decide whether to replace the pad.

The authors have included a section with questions that allow readers to assess how well their skills compare to those of an experienced automotive service technician.
