This document outlines a proposed project aimed at evaluating the relative effectiveness of two models for improving adult first language literacy in Cameroon, in Africa. The Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) that specializes in language development and literacy. The Cameroon Association for Bible Translation and Literacy (CABTAL) also works on language development and literacy and, in addition, focuses on Bible translation.
The author notes that the SIL and the CABTAL share almost the same resources and have similar goals. Their main difference is that SIL is international whereas CABTAL is Cameroonian.
The author explains the theoretical framework for the project; outlines the proposed research methodology; and provides definitions for key terms.
