This document contains resources from a workshop based on the Orton-Gillingham Multisensory reading program, which combines seeing, saying, hearing, and writing.
The first resource is a chart describing common areas of learning deficit; their possible effects on a student; and suggestions for resources and strategies to improve learning. For instance, a student may have a deficit when it comes to identifying sounds within a word. The deficit may present itself as a problem in hearing and remembering sound sequences and sound patterns, and strategies to improve learning would include using rhyming word or breaking compound words into syllables.
The second resource is a one-hour diagnostic tool to discover strengths and weaknesses, along with a diagnostic lesson plan, and advice on analyzing the diagnostic tool.
The document also includes a tool and lesson plan to help a student learn the alphabet.
This document is part of the Learning Disabilities and Whole Life Project, a two-year professional development and training project developed to help adult literacy educators address learning disabilities among their students.
