National Adult Literacy Database

This report summarizes the findings from a study of family literacy in the workplace. The goals of the study were to identify current family literacy practices and the implication for Alberta’s next generation, and to understand the human stories behind statistical data on literacy.

Researchers conducted interviews with employees in five occupation categories in a variety of industries, including construction, education and business services. All respondents had at least one child under the age of 18.

The authors note that most respondents, regardless of occupation level, read to their children daily but seemed to place less importance on modelling reading behaviour. Regardless of their own achievements, respondents had high expectations for their children.
