Resource Guide: Integrating Essential Skills Into Literacy Programming (2009)

Resource Guide: Integrating Essential Skills Into Literacy Programming

Authors: Literacy for Life Foundation and Rainbow Literacy Society

Collection: Learning Materials

This guide grew out of a two-year project carried out by the Literacy for Life Foundation and the Rainbow Literacy Society, two Alberta organizations that provide in-home programs to teach parents how to help their children develop literacy skills while, at the same time, improving their own skills.

The project looked at integrating Essential Skills into rural family and adult literacy programs. Project participants evaluated a variety of activities, some based on commercial products like board games and others that use items found around the house.

For each activity, they have prepared a form that shows how the activity connects to Essential Skills; which learning components it focuses on; how it is carried out and what items are needed; the age level it is appropriate for; and whether it can be used for people learning English as a Second Language.
