This essay is the third in the Newfoundland and Labrador Adult Basic Education Social History Series, developed to provide adult learners with meaningful literacy materials drawn from their own vibrant culture. The intended audience for the series is ABE Level 1 students. Because of the disparate subject matter, however, the essays are written in varying degrees of reading difficulty.

The essays were created by five professional writers: Ed Kavanagh, Carmelita McGrath, Janet McNaughton, Kathryn Welbourn and Kathleen Winter.

At the end of each essay, supplemental material is included, such as topics and questions for discussion, and possible projects and other suggested learning activities related to the essay.
