The Next Step – Reading Skills for Adults series is part of a project intended to enhance New Brunswick adult upgrading curriculum and instructional materials. The focus of this series of six books is reading comprehension skills.

This is the fourth in the series; this book builds on and reinforces the information provided in the first three books, 14014, 14015 and 14016. Chapters in this book include instruction on the main idea, facts and details, sequencing, context clues, inferences, logical conclusions, facts vs. opinion, vocabulary development (homonyms and idioms), figures of speech and literacy devices (such as metaphor, simile, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, irony, and foreshadowing), reading literature (such as poetry, short stories, myths and legends), novels and journalism (newspapers and magazines).
