This report outlines the direct and indirect benefits of investing in literacy to improve health and safety in the workplace.

Many organizations have manuals that set out health and safety practices, but relying on written materials carries the risk that employees may not be able to read and understand them, the authors note. If an accident happens, managers usually respond by reviewing procedures, rather than determining whether workers have the literacy skills to understand and follow those procedures.

This report grew out of a two-year research project that included a literature review, a national survey, interviews with stakeholders, and case studies.
