Fact Sheet: Dealing with Learning Disabilities in Relationships

Series: LDANB Fact Sheets - Adults and LD

Authors: Learning Disabilities Association of New Brunswick (LDANB)

Collection: Learning Materials

The author of this fact sheet explains that learning disabilities can present challenges in personal relationships, as well as in school and workplace settings. The learning disability may affect the way a person processes information, organizes time and tasks, and communicates with others, all of which are factors that can cause friction in a relationship.

The author advises the person with the learning disability to get a good grasp on how it may affect everyday interactions; to avoid overburdening the partner by being self-reliant; and to ask for accommodations in a direct manner without feeling guilty or making excuses.

For the partner, the author’s advice includes being tolerant of the other person’s way of doing things and being aware that the “symptoms” of a learning disability may be more pronounced when the person is tired.
