The guide includes examples of documents rewritten according to the principles of clear language, along with numerous tips for clarifying the message in a document. In addition to hints for composing a clear message, there are also suggestions for using type size, fonts and capitalization to make documents easier to read.

One learner wrote about keeping budgies as pets, while another shared what she had learned about Pakistan by corresponding with a penpal in that country.

The manual begins by setting out general learning outcomes: understanding Canadian workplace safety policy; practising pronunciation clarity; learning about working in a multicultural organization; and expanding idiomatic and industry-specific vocabulary.

The manual includes ten modules, each dealing with a specific aspect of safety like dealing with hazardous materials, emergency response or personal protective equipment. Each safety issue becomes a conduit to the other general learning outcomes. For example, the module on fire safety deals with sentence stress to practise pronunciation clarity; understanding small talk as an aspect of learning to work in a multicultural organization; and how to make and apology as a way to expand idiomatic vocabulary.

The manual also includes a list of idioms, a glossary and list of recommended readings on intercultural issues.

This guide offers facilitators the tools they need to deliver a one-day workshop designed to help learners build and practise their oral communication skills.

Oral communication has four levels of complexity, with one being the most basic level and four the most advanced. The curriculum in this workshop is targeted for learners at Levels 2 and 3. The introduction and conclusion modules of the workshop can be used with both Level 2 and Level 3 audiences with minimal adaptation. The core exercises, however, are specifically targeted to Level 2 or Level 3.

The guide contains step-by-step instructions for preparing for the workshop; a supplies checklist; and a suggested timetable for the workshop.

The workshop curriculum’s modular structure allows facilitators to customize the content to meet the needs of intended learners.

The authors note that it is not necessary to cover all six skill areas in a one-day workshop. Facilitators are encouraged to choose topics and exercises that are most relevant to the abilities, needs and interests of their learners.
