A Guide to making a storysack

This guide explains how storysacks can be used to get children excited about reading. A storysack includes books, an audiotape of the story, props and suggestions for activities based on the books.
The guide explains how to use a storysack in a variety of settings; offers guidelines for choosing appropriate books; suggests possible activities to go with the books; and provides ideas for props.
It also includes many patterns for making dolls and puppets to go along with storysacks.

This how-to kit can be used by teachers and adult educators, or it can be used for a community workshop to encourage writing by people of all ages.
The authors begin with a section on prewriting activities, including brainstorming and clustering, to help learners choose a topic or narrow their focus. The next section, on writing techniques and ideas, helps learners generate, organize and communicate their ideas.
Each section includes handouts and suggested activities.
The authors have also included information on holding a writing contest, including a step-by-step organizing guide and samples of rules, entry forms, posters and certificates of participation. As well, they have included advice on publishing the winning entries.

It includes ideas for making musical instruments and props; suggestions for children’s CDs; an annotated list of books based on songs; and suggestions for books adults can turn to for learning activities.
The authors have also included suggestions for parents to help children learn language; improve their gross and fine motor skills; develop thinking and social skills; and learn about math, space and time.

The starting point of this lesson plan is the picture book "I Can’t Have Bannock but the Beaver Has a Dam," by Bernelda Wheeler. The book tells the story of a boy whose mother can’t make bannock, a kind of bread traditionally made by First Nations people, because a beaver has cut down a tree and knocked out a hydro line, cutting off the electrical power for the family’s stove.
