A Manual for Teaching Basic Math to Adults

This document is a manual for teaching basic math to adults. It was written as part of a project funded by the National Office of Literacy and Learning (NOLL) and is intended for adult basic education math instructors who are interested in changing their teaching practice to bring it more in line with recommendations from the research literature on teaching numeracy to adults.
The manual sets out some "best practices" from the literature, then outlines some difficulties instructors may face in implementing them, and makes suggestions for overcoming those difficulties.
There are also many pages of activities ready for immediate classroom use that provide examples of some ways to implement the best practices.

2. Deeper Into Math (2005)

Deeper into Math is a math workbook focuse on multiplication, division, fractions and decimals. Each section consists of an explanation of the concept followed by practical exercises. Before tackling the concepts in this workbook, students should complete the pretest included in the book to make sure they have the necessary addition and subtraction skills.

3. Family Math Fun! (2008)

This document is aimed at three target audiences: people who work directly with children, including parents, childcare workers, preschool teachers and elementary school teachers; people who work with parents and children together, including facilitators of parenting groups and family literacy programs; and Adult Basic Education instructors and tutors who teach basic math to adults. The introduction discusses how each of these groups can use the activities in this book to learn math.
The author has included more than 40 activities families can do together to learn math. The activities are varied and include songs and rhymes, craft projects and outdoor activities like nature walks.

Home Math is one of three workbooks in the NWT Literacy Council's Everyday Math Skills series and can be used in conjunction with the booklet Simply Math. Home Math is designed for adult learners and is written in plain language. It is divided into three sections, each covering a variety of math concepts, followed by worksheets and a review page.
Section one, Measurement in Your Home, covers area, perimeter, circumference, temperature and time. Section two, Environmental Math, shows how to help the environment and save money at the same time by cutting down on water consumption, electricity use and garbage. Section three, Paying Bills, deals with handling bills for utilities, credit cards and mortgages.

5. How To Kit - Family Math (2008)

This How to Kit is a math resource for teachers, family literacy facilitators and families. It offers a variety of easy, fun and hands-on activities for families with children from ages 7 – 10. This kit provides an opportunity to engage families in developing positive attitudes towards math by working and learning together to solve math problems. The kit suggests activities for community events such as a Family Math Night and includes group activities, math games, math alibis, math problems, time activities and tips for parents. This How to Kit is one in a series of How to Kits available through the NWT Literacy Council website at www.nwt.literacy.ca.

Kitchen Math is one of three workbooks in the NWT Literacy Council's Everyday Math Skills series. It can be used in conjunction with the math booklet, Simply Math. Kitchen Math is designed to help adult learners with math and is written in plain language. Section one is Shopping for the Kitchen, which includes comparison shopping, finding the unit cost of an item and buying large appliances. Section two is Using Measurements which includes doubling recipes, comparing ratios, and using metric conversions. Section three is Nutrition, which covers calories and teaches learners to read food labels.

Section one includes personal finances, and setting up a budget. Section two is on saving money and compound interest. Section three covers consumer math and helps students learn to calculate discounts, tips, gas consumption and cell phone options.
