Authors: National Adult Literacy Database (NALD)
This webinar, presented in May 2013, offers both an overview of the National Adult Literacy Database (NALD) library, and pointers for using it effectively.
The webinar is hosted by Lorette Melanson, NALD’s acquisitions manager, who explains that NALD is Canada’s largest digital library dedicated to learning and literacy. As of mid-April 2013, it contained a total of 6,345 documents, with about one-third of those in French and the remainder in English. The resources in NALD’s library are divided into two main collections: research materials, and learning materials.
A great deal of research goes into locating a variety of resources for the library, including both English and French documents; materials related to research and to learning; and multimedia materials. People working in the literacy and essential skill field sometimes recommend documents, and written permission must be received before documents are posted to the library.
Among the priorities for acquisition are learning materials; Aboriginal materials; videos and podcasts; workplace and workforce documents; essential skills materials; and documents related to financial literacy.
The webinar includes an explanation of the search capabilities of the NALD library, with a description of the advanced features that can be used to enhance the precision of a query.
