Authors: Literacy Partners of Manitoba (LPM)

"Demystifying Adult Literacy For Volunteer Tutors: A Reference Handbook and Resource Guide" is a compilation of some of this background information gathered from a variety of different sources.

Each section ends with a list of references from which the information is obtained.

This Reference Handbook and Resource Guide is intended as a 'tool' for new and more experienced tutors, to provide background information about:

- literacy itself, how widespread it is and why;
- volunteer tutors - roles and responsibilities, and what personal characteristics are helpful in your role;
working with adult learners, what they need, how they feel;
- developing the tutor/learner relationship and learning program.

Also provided are: a glossary entitled "Are you literacy literate?" which outlines various types of literacy programs, and clarifies many common terms within the literacy field; and an extensive Annotated Bibliography of resources available through Literacy Partners of Manitoba.

Authors: Amanda Marlin, Gwen Zwicker, Suzanne Zappia, David Bruce

This document outlines a study commissioned by the Rural Secretariat (New Brunswick) and carried out by the Rural and Small Town Programme at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB. The study’s goal was to summarize the impacts of low literacy levels in rural New Brunswick through a literature review, and to provide a comprehensive inventory of all literacy programs and services available in the province as of March 2008.

Rural New Brunswick was defined as all regions outside the major urban centres of Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton.

The authors outline the project’s methodology; summarize the literature review; and present findings from the inventory of services.

This document was published by the Rural Secretariat of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

A Learners Toolkit

Authors: Nunavut Literacy Council

This learner's toolkit begins by providing general information on literacy such as the meaning of the term "literacy" and an explanation of the International Adult Literacy and Skills Survey. It then focuses more specifically on literacy in Nunavut, looking at the literacy levels among adults in Nunavut and the types of programs needed by adult learners in that region. The last part of this toolkit discusses what citizens can do to encourage the government to make literacy a priority and includes advice on lobbying candidates and sample letters to candidates.
