A literacy & life skills program for women in conflict with the law
Authors: Bev Sochatsky, Sarah Stewart
In 1998, a program was undertaken by the Edmonton John Howard Society and the Elizabeth Fry Society of Edmonton, with the collaborative support of numerous community-based agencies and organizations. This program was especially designed for women who were in, or at risk of being in, conflict with the law. The program focused on an integrated literacy and life skills approach to learning, with a commitment to participatory approaches to education from a feminist perspective.
The program had three Phases: Phase One, research and the development of a conceptual framework, was conducted in 1998-1999; In Phase Two, the framework was tested through four program pilots held in Edmonton in 1999-2000; Phase Three began in September 2000 with the goal of integrating literacy skills into an already-existing life skills program.
This curriculum guide is a sequel to the curriculum developed in Phase Two. It is a record of selected Changing Paths program activities from September 2000 to June 2002.

An Exercise Workbook
The Companion to SARAW (Speech Assisted Reading and Writing) was developed for an expressed need, to expand the SARAW program's capabilities within the framework of the computer program. With the READ section of SARAW being an untapped wealth of learning opportunities, the stories from READ were taken and from them Directed Reading and Thinking Activities were created. The same stories were also used to develop basic grammar exercises. Finally, a chapter was designed specifically for volunteer tutors and instructors that includes specific activities that could be done using different sections of the SARAW program. The ultimate goal of this publication is to make learning as easy and interesting as possible.

Exploring Women's Independence
Young girls growing up with fairy tales such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, whether in older classic versions or those in modern movies, form certain visions of how their lives are going to, or should, be. The realities of being a woman in today's society are seldom fairy tale quality, however, and in most instances can prove to offer significant challenges. This document includes thirty activities designed to help girls and women think about the messages contained in fairy tales, in order to create new stories that help them grow toward independence and a life based on individual, thoughtful choices.
