In My Own Words

Graduation 2002 Yearbook

Authors: East End Literacy

This Yearbook contains many stories, articles and poems written by the students at East End Literacy (EEL) during their graduation year 2001-2002. By improving, and in many cases, excelling in areas such as reading and writing, speaking and listening, technology and numeracy skills, the students at EEL have proven that community counts. By taking greater control of their learning and becoming better managers of their life and their time, they help to renew the confidence their teachers have in what they do. In the last year, the students have helped to reinforce the belief that effective community-based organisations provide opportunities for healthy growth and development. Learning is a reason to get involved in your community - to volunteer, to get involved with your children, to work and to listen to one another.
For a copy of the Yearbook, please contact : EEL, 269 Gerrard Avenue East, Toronto ON M5A 2G3, Tel. (416) 968-6989, Fax (416) 968-0597, Email : eastend@telus.net (02.10.18)

13. Learning ...... To Live (2003)

Learning ...... To Live

Success Stories of Nova Scotia Adult Learners

Authors: Alex Morrison, Margaret van Gurp

Learning…..to Live celebrates the accomplishments of adult learners throughout Nova Scotia. The book will create an awareness of the significance the acquiring of literacy skills can make in a person's life.

There are others in communities all over Nova Scotia who wish to participate in learning programs but who, for one reason or another, have not yet done so. It is hoped that this book will inspire them to become participants and, in so doing, enrich their lives and their families' lives.

14. New Words, New Worlds (1996)

New Words, New Worlds

Authors: Elma Gerwin

These stories and poems were originally contributed to the student writing section of the Winnipeg Volunteer Reading Aides newsletter.

With the help of a grant from the Canadian Give the Gift of Literacy Foundation, Winnipeg Volunteer Reading Aides (WVRA) has produced a four-volume set of books. All of the 15 stories and poems were written by students of WVRA. Winnipeg artist Glennys Hardie provided the illustrations, which comprise at least half of each page. As well as enhancing the stories, they can be used to enable the reader to predict narrative events, and to provide contextual clues to word recognition and meaning, etc. Indeed, learners could be encouraged to write their own text for the pictures, or the pictures could be used with or without text in sequencing activities.

In general, Books 1 and 2 have shorter words and sentences, while Books 3 and 4 have more text and are somewhat more complex in style and conceptual content. These books should appeal to readers of almost any age or background, including aboriginal, ESL, and those with learning disabilities.
