Agency Achievement and Assessment Tools

This document was prepared for Literacy Network Northeast (LNN), one of 16 regional literacy networks in Ontario funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU).
It contains a variety of charts and other tools for measuring a literacy agency’s progress in achieving its goals. Topics covered include gathering stakeholder input; community linkages, networking and partnerships; comparing statistics from year to year; and measuring customer service.
Some of the material relates specifically to MTCU guidelines but most of it is applicable to literacy agencies in general.

Module 1: Manage my basic needs
Series: Essential Skills for Personal Success Curriculum

This is the workbook for the first module of the “Essential Skills for Personal Success!” curriculum. It focuses on managing basic needs, like eating well, finding a place to live, and dressing well.
To illustrate the material being taught, the authors introduce four students from CAST – Community Adult Skills and Training – who are improving their essential skills. The four students – two men and two women – range in age from 18 to 46.
The authors include a variety of learning activities and provide checklists so learners can evaluate their essential skills at the beginning and end of each chapter.

The skills covered include reading to a child and helping with homework; finding telephone listings; handling money and banking matters; being organized; discovering personal learning styles; and dealing with social services agencies.

Practitioner Guidelines
Series: Essential Skills for Personal Success Curriculum

This practitioner resource introduces the “Essential Skills for Personal Success!” curriculum, developed by Literacy Network Northeast, based in Timmins, Ontario.
The curriculum is divided into four modules that deal with managing basic needs; improving and maintaining health; handling personal issues and relationships; and participating fully as members of the community.
The authors begin with general guidelines for practitioners teaching the curriculum, then provide specific guidelines for each module. They note that the material is linked to both Essential Skills and Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) levels.
