In 1986, Canadian broadcaster and journalist Peter Gzowski organized a golf tournament to raise funds for literacy. That tournament, the Peter Gzowski Invitational (PGI), evolved into a nation-wide annual event that has raised more than $12 million to support literacy initiatives in the provinces and territories where the PGIs are held.
This tribute to the late Peter Gzowski and the PGIs aired on CBC Television’s Rick Mercer Report in 2010. Mercer notes that PGIs have been held in all of Canada’s provinces and territories and, while golf is the common element, each PGI also reflects the character of the location in which it is held.
The video includes interviews with an adult learner, broadcasters Peter Mansbridge and Shelagh Rogers, former New Brunswick premier Frank McKenna, and singer/songwriter Murray McLauchlan.
