The authors explain that a comic is usually a short instalment of a larger story, while a graphic novel is usually an entire story bound and published in a single book. They point out that graphic novels have an important role to play in promoting literacy and may appeal especially to reluctant readers and visual learners.
The authors go through the steps involved in producing comics or graphic novels, including brainstorming to come up with ideas; developing characters; drawing stick figures and beyond; perspective drawing; and adding speech bubbles.
The material has been divided into sections aimed at students in kindergarten to Grade 3, which focuses on simple comics, and at students in Grades 4 to 6, which offers suggestions for producing more complex graphic novels.
Also included are links to online resources for both students and teachers.

The authors of this kit point out that learning about a variety of cultures helps people become more understanding and accepting of others. With that goal in mind, they have come up with a variety of activities that can be used in a classroom, library or literacy program to help explore other cultures.
Some of the activities, like a multicultural feast, are designed for multi-age groups while others, including a number of games, are aimed at children. The authors have also included suggestions for a multicultural movie discussion group, with suggestions for films that would be appropriate for adults and older teens.
The authors make special note of the richness and variety of Aboriginal cultures found throughout Canada.
Also provided is a list of 30 books that explore multicultural issues from a variety of perspectives.
