QLWG Essential Life Skills - Unit 6
Series: QLWG Skills for Life Series
Authors: Vicki-Ann Huegli
Competency-based learning meets the needs of all learners. It is important to keep in mind, however, that all learners are different. In order to address the needs and interests of all learners, the units in this publication have been divided by Essential Life Skills and Individual Life Skills.
Essential Life Skills are important for everyone, while Individual Life Skills address the needs and interests of different learners. Once learners have completed the “Essential” units, they may choose a unit that is applicable to their interests and lifestyle.

Featuring Kate Nonesuch, Literacy Educator and Curriculum Writer
Series: The Teaching Toolbox
Authors: Literacy Nova Scotia
This video, part of a series prepared by Literacy Nova Scotia, focuses on ways to turn the marking of a math exercise into a learning situation.
Literacy educator Kate Nonesuch uses the example of a worksheet on adding fractions, some with the same denominator and others with different denominators. In this case, the first three problems have been answered correctly, giving the instructor an opportunity to discuss how the student arrived at those answers and to give positive feedback.
The student has answered two more complex problems incorrectly. This time, the instructor asks him what is different about those problems and encourages him to figure out the correct way to do them.

Authors: Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks (CCLB)
This lesson plan, part of the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) Essential Skills series, is aimed at learners who need to be familiar with measurement systems used in Canadian workplaces. They are taught to estimate measurements in metric and imperial units and then to confirm more exact figures using conversion tables.
The lesson also focuses on the continued use of multiple measurement systems in Canada.
The lesson is rated CLB level 4-6 and focuses on the essential skills of numeracy and document use. It requires about 1.5 hours, plus time to do an online quiz.
