Personal Stories of the Military In Gander, Newfoundland

Authors: Jacqueline Chantal Snow

Personal stories of the Military in Gander, Newfoundland.
The stories presented in this publication are based upon the personal memories of the participating individuals. It is intended for adult students, as resource reading material. The sentences and font size were simplified for easy reading. Gander's rich military history is marked not only by the many significant war-time events that were associated with the forces that served in the area, but by the many personal stories and memories of the people that have worked at Gander over the years. These anecdotal experiences provide valued insight into life at the base, and help paint a picture of the changes that Gander has seen, from wartime, to the Cold War, and up to today's relative peacetime status. Even though Gander's role as an International Airport has diminished over time, there are still 800-900 international military flights that stop at Gander each year.

The colourful experiences that these international crews have brought to Gander have helped make the town one of the most unique places to live in Newfoundland. Many people remark that Gander has a character that is very different when compared to other Newfoundland towns of its size, and this is in large part due to the cosmopolitan and transient nature of life in a military and government town. This has given Gander a richness in history that is often best reflected in works such as this one. Gary Porter, Adult Learner [Video - 3:00]

Authors: Laubach Literacy Ontario (LLO), Barrie Literacy Council

On February 28, 2011, Laubach Literacy Ontario held its second annual Literacy Awareness Day at Queen’s Park, home of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, in Toronto.

This video, recorded that day, features an adult learner describing how he decided at the age of 40 to improve his literacy skills. Although he was successful in his job with the family business and owned a house, there was something missing from his life.

He went to the Barrie Literacy Council in Ontario, where he worked with several tutors. Four years later, he received his General Education Development (GED) certificate.

3. Geometry Part 1 – Perimeter - Concept [Video - 12:07] (2011)

Geometry Part 1 – Perimeter - Concept [Video - 12:07]

Series: Learning on Demand: Numeracy - The Basics - Video Tutorials

Authors: Workplace Education Manitoba (WEM)

This video tutorial introduces the concept of perimeter, the distance around an object. The instructor notes that while any object has a perimeter, he is limiting this tutorial to triangles, circles and rectangles.

For the triangle and rectangle, he simply uses a ruler to measure the length of the sides, then adds those figures together to come up with the perimeter.

However, measuring the perimeter of a circle poses a challenge. The instructor explains that the perimeter of a circle is also called its circumference and can be calculated by multiplying its diameter by pi, usually given as 3.14.

Geometry Part 1 – Perimeter - Practice [Video – 5:46]

Series: Learning on Demand: Numeracy - The Basics - Video Tutorials

Authors: Workplace Education Manitoba (WEM)

This video tutorial gives learners a chance to practise their skills at calculating the perimeter of an object.

It includes three examples, involving either a rectangle, a triangle or a circle. The learner is asked to pause the video and work out the problems on his own before restarting the video to see the instructor’s solutions.

Geometry Part 2 – Area - Concept [Video - 19:04]

Series: Learning on Demand: Numeracy - The Basics - Video Tutorials

Authors: Workplace Education Manitoba (WEM)

This video introduces the concept of area, which the instructor explains is simply the amount of surface an object covers.

He focuses primarily on right-angle triangles, rectangles and circles, calculating the area for one example of each of those shapes.

He points out that in order to calculate the areas of those shapes, it is essential to know and remember the necessary equations.

Geometry Part 3 – Volume - Concept [Video - 13:25]

Series: Learning on Demand: Numeracy - The Basics - Video Tutorials

Authors: Workplace Education Manitoba (WEM)

This video tutorial provides an introduction to the concept of volume in geometry. The instructor explains that volume is the amount of space an object takes up. For example, the amount of space available for storage inside a box is the volume of that box.

Volume is always measured in cubic units and involves calculations that include the three dimensions of length, width and height.

To illustrate the concept, the instructor uses various calculations based on the hypothetical case of a manufacturer who must figure out the size of the boxes he will need to ship his products.
