Keep Your Body Fit!

This is one in a series of booklets prepared by the Calgary-based Vocational and Rehabilitation Research Institute (VRRI), an agency that helps people with disabilities as well as the community at large.

The authors describe the three components of physical fitness -- strength, flexibility, and endurance – and offer suggestions for improving each of those measures. They include a colour-coded plan the reader can fill in with fitness activities for each day of the week.

Part of the document is in the style of a workbook, with the reader being asked to fill in the answers to questions like "How do I keep my body strong?"

The material is easy to read. The document has many illustrations, including ones that show people in wheelchairs engaging in physical activity.

This e-book is part of a series called Best of the Reader, which consists of stories from The Westcoast Reader, a newspaper for adults trying to improve their English reading skills.

Each story is accompanied by exercises to help learners improve both their reading skills and their grasp of English. The material can be used by a learner on his own or by a teacher in a classroom.

The focus of this book is safety, with stories about driving safely, preventing falls, and protecting personal information while using a bank machine.

The reading level of each story is indicated by an icon showing one, two or three books.

This short video is one in a series about financial literacy prepared by ABC Life Literacy Canada, with funding from TD Bank Group and Government of Canada.

The narrator points to a recent survey showing that only one-third of youth reported that their parents talked with them regularly about financial matters. However, young people both want and need to discuss those issues with their parents.

The video features a teenage girl and her father talking about how they deal with money matters. It also offers several tips for improving financial skills, including writing down anticipated costs; reading up on financial matters; and discussing the difference between needs and wants.

Kitchen Math is one of three workbooks in the NWT Literacy Council's Everyday Math Skills series. It can be used in conjunction with the math booklet, Simply Math. Kitchen Math is designed to help adult learners with math and is written in plain language. It is divided into three sections, each covering a variety of math concepts, followed by worksheets and a review page.

Section one is Shopping for the Kitchen, which includes comparison shopping, finding the unit cost of an item and buying large appliances. Section two is Using Measurements which includes doubling recipes, comparing ratios, and using metric conversions. Section three is Nutrition, which covers calories and teaches learners to read food labels.

This facilitator’s guide is part of Knowing When Enough is Enough, a resource prepared by the Calgary-based Vocational and Rehabilitation Research Institute (VRRI), an agency that helps people with disabilities as well as the community at large.

In addition to the facilitator’s guide, the resource includes a comic and fact sheets, written in plain language, for the participants.

The facilitator’s guide includes information on alcohol, including what constitutes a standard drink, and suggestions for leading discussions about peer pressure, coping and refusal skills, and social consequences.

The resource includes instructions and materials for group learning activities, like the cookie exercise, which helps young people learn strategies for dealing with peer pressure.

The authors note that the program can be used in a classroom, a small group, or one on one.

A Resource Manual for ESL and Literacy Instructors Working with Low-Literate Learners

This manual, which grew out of a project carried out by the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association, is a resource for literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) instructors working with learners who have low literacy skills.

The manual includes curriculum guidelines, lesson plans and activities organized into units based on themes like families, home, using public transportation and making an appointment.

The author has also included a section on how culture influences learning. An appendix contains brief guides to the history and culture of eight countries: Afghanistan, Burma/Myanmar, Colombia, Eritrea, Iran, Pakistan, Somalia and Sudan.
