Authors: Halton Industry Education Council
This brief document outlines the different paths to an apprenticeship in Ontario and provides advice for making the most of the opportunities available.
In addition to the traditional route of finding an employer to sponsor an apprentice, other options include the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, which allows young people to register as apprentices while still in secondary school; union or industry approved training; Ontario college diplomas related to skilled trades; cooperative diploma apprenticeship programs; pre-apprenticeship programs; and private career colleges.
The authors have included tips for researching trades; forming an action plan; preparing a portfolio; making cold calls to look for work opportunities; and getting ready for interviews.
